Dabsville revolved around Andrew, and none was more devoted to him than Sleeper. “Harry loves you best in the world,” Gardner once wrote Andrew; “we all come lagging behind.” Yet as the men’s body language in the 1914 image suggests, Sleeper’s unrequited romantic interest in Andrew complicated their lifelong friendship.
