2. Specular Light

This is the surface of the painting before treatment shown with specular light. This light coming from the side highlights the irregularity of the surface. The cupping and lifting of the paint flakes that have caused this irregularity are likely due to the manner and materials that were used to create the painting in combination with the ambient conditions the painting has endured. Paintings in this condition need to be lined so that the flakes can be flattened and remain adhered to the canvas below.
